If you are tired of eating out at the same kind of Hong Kong Style restaurants, here is a good news, a new Hong Kong Fusion Style Restaurant is just opened in Markham area, 木子茶檔 (Ki Ko Cafe) is located at Woodbine and Hwy 7 (3000 Highway 7 E, Unit A2), right across Michael-Angelo’s.  The restaurant could probably fit 50 people in there and they have LLBO too which was kind of a surprise 😛  For someone like me, who loves HK style, this is definitely a perfect lunch choice to go, especially the location is very close to my office.  Price is not bad, very economical, presentation of food is well made on the dishes we ordered, everything tasted as good as it looks too but!!!  Because they are soo new, I am sure there are little things that could be improved, only time will tell, still, a very good choice in Markham area.

In case you are wondering, why their style of food is so similar to Fav Café (鍾意坊) (the same plaza as 黃金閣), well, the owner used to work there just FYI 😛

福臨 – Times Square Richmond Hill

What better things to do on a boring Family Day holiday?  飲茶(drink tea) with two of the best Aunties ever, Corolla and Connie at 福臨 at Times Square Richmond Hill!!!  The newly renovated 福臨 is finally back from a “umm… restaurant” to a “woah restaurant” after years or struggling…  Tho I only went to it a couple times years ago, this restaurant was always on the bottom of my list until today 😀  The DIM SUM was amazingly good and they even have a few that you won’t find out there like 木瓜奶盞, this place basically topped most of the Chinese DIM SUM places I have tried.  Once you put the food in your mouth, you just know that they really had someone to make those DIM SUM, unlike some just served frozen mass production DIM SUM to you…  Anyways, a must try 😀

輝煌閣 (Royal TeaHouse Dim Sum Specialist) with Aunties

Perfect timing to celebrate Christmas and New Year with a dim sum lunch with the aunties/Joe sir, the last time we had a gathering was over a month ago at 利家盛酒家.  If you remember, Joe sir got a terrible burn on his hands the last time we saw him and gladly they are perfectly fine now.  It was our Joe sir’s choice to go 輝煌閣 (Royal TeaHouse Dim Sum Specialist), located at the corner of Woodbine ave. and Applecreek.  Most dim sum places don’t last very long but this is one of the those restaurants that has survived for years, and I was right, everything tasted as good as years ago, some even better too.  The location is perfect because it is very close to my work place, and I go to the same plaza almost every week for lunch, just not dim sum but now, this is really a good choice for me and my colleagues to kill time haha.  Not to mention I have a 10% discount too, but lunch only 😛  If anyone who works in the area are interested, let me know and we can have lunch there 😀

BTW, What is Dim Sum in case you don’t know?

Dim sum refers to a style of Chinese food prepared as small bite-sized or individual portions of food traditionally served in small steamer baskets or on small plates. Dim sum is also well known for the unique way it is served in some restaurants, wherein fully cooked and ready-to-serve dim sum dishes are carted around the restaurant for customers to choose their orders while seated at their tables.

Eating dim sum at a restaurant is usually known in Cantonese as going to “drink tea” (yum cha, 飲茶), as tea is typically served with dim sum.

Joe Sir’s Birthday Dinner @ 利家盛酒家 2012

The birthday of our cooking class teacher Joseph Ho is near so we decided to bring him to a fantastic dinner just like last year.  Joe sir wasn’t able to drive because he got a terrible burn on his both hands from hot boiling frying oil preparing stuffs for a cooking class…  Glad he was OK but his hands were still wrapped up with bandages and stuff, so Christine picked him up to our dinner party gathering 😀  利家盛酒家 was our choice, which has been around in Toronto for sometime, located at 14th Ave. and Kennedy Ave.  A place where you HAVE to make a reservation or you will never get a chance to dine there if you walk in :-p  It was a fantastic restaurant choice aside from other restaurants we go to all the time, price was not bad really, about $40 a head with all the dishes we had, just look at those amazing food pictures below, yum yum…  If you are planning to have a big dinner with at least like 10 people, 利家盛酒家 is really a good place if you don’t want to spend too much, food quality is really not bad either but don’t forget to call to make a reservation tho :-p  anyways, too bad they don’t have a website but luckily, I have their no. 905.475.2822

Well, happy birthday Joe sir and wish his hands will get well soon 😀

O Mei

Although I had not been going to cooking lessons for a while, I am still very connected with my Aunties (cooking class classmates).  Joyce and Debbie are 2 of my top favorite aunties, so of course I would have to organized a dinner gathering to celebrate their birthday this week.  O Mei, located on 420 Hw# 7 Richmond Hill, just right at the MacDonald’s plaza.  A restaurant that has been around for a long long while, I have heard a lot of good words about their dinner varieties especially their lobsters dishes but never experienced it, so I thought I should definitely give this a try.

There was no doubt that the first thing we ordered was a 9+ lbs lobster/5 (龍蝦五吃), Chicken with 2 tastes (鳳雙飛), Taiwanese oyster (台式生蠔) and some misc. dishes.  It was totally a weight gaining experience because everything tasted and looked so good so I just kept on stuffing myself :p  Plus, because Debbie and Christine know the manager, we got soo many varieties of dessert for free…  At the very end, we cleaned out everything on the table, stuffed ourselves with a few pounds heavier belly and left the restaurant with a big smile on our faces 😀  2 big thumbs up!!!  Definitely a Chinese restaurant to consider if you are looking for a good Chinese diner even on weekdays if you know what I mean 🙂
